For the brightness and other settings automatically changed in all my mods, it's because i include an autoexec.cfg file that contains more settings that are executed after the Doomconfig.cfg is executed when you run D3 with a mod containing this Autoexec.cfg file, but to the contrary of the Doomconfig.cfg that is overwritten on every D3 execution when you change the settings when in game, the Autoexec.cfg is not changed and preserves the settings that it has, because of this i use that file to preserve very important generic settings.

Of course, i understand that the brightness and gamma may be needed to be changed specifically for every different computer and screen display, for example you can open the Autoexec.cfg file that is contained on the mod folder that you want to change the settings and search for the r_brightness, r_gamma and r_lightScale to change it to your own taste and the save it for ever on this Autoexec.cfg file, you will need to do that for every mod folder you want to customise to your own taste, or copy your own Autoexec.cfg changed file to base folder and then remove all the other Autoexec.cfg files on any other mod folders, because the base folder it's in fact a generic mod folder that is always used, ok.

So you can change the settings you want and place // on every lines you want to disable on this Autoexec.cfg files or drastically remove this file to completely on every mod folder that you want to disable this changes for ever, ok. big grin

As for the crashes, i think that the most common could have been a Doomconfig.cfg or Autoexec.cfg file that contains things that wrongly describe your computer specs, so sure, you also will need to change this settings on the Autoexec.cfg file, sure, because as i said this file is not changed by the game when you change the in game settings, only is overwritten the Doomconfig.cfg file, so for the Autoexec.cfg you will need to edit manually with your preferred ascii text editor, such as Notepad.exe or TextPad.exe, that is what i use, it is not included on Windows, but is a very good programmers ascii text editor easy to use and very efficient that i recommend carefully, it also has computer language syntax highlighting !!!

So, what kind of lines you should change that if wrongly set, may crash your computer, well i will tell you something or at least the most important and potentially dangerous if set it wrong...:

seta image_cacheMegs "96" // def. "20"
seta image_cacheMinK "2048" // def. "200"

This previous two lines, leave it as they are, because if they have a too low values can make the game crash the computer when trying to load a very big level (a map that is very big in size and has a very big number of entities).

seta image_useCache "0" // Better leave this value at 0, so the cache is not used and you will not have to think on the previous two lines that sets the cache memory for the images.

seta r_displayRefresh "85" // Well, it depends on your screen display if it is able to use this Refresh rate or not, if you don't know leave it at 0 that is the default.

seta com_videoRam "256" // It depends on the RAM that your gfx card has, of course, i suppose that you have an NVidia 7600GT 256Mb. or better or an ATI9800Pro 256Mb. or higher to run D3 on, also i hope that you have at least 2Gb. of RAM on your computer, RAM is physic fast memory, i am not talking about HD space.

seta r_useIndexBuffers "0" // Needs to be 0 always, at least on D3 !!!
seta r_useVertexBuffers "1" // Needs to be 1 always, at least on D3 !!!

Well, this are basically the most important and potentially dangerous you need to know, of course there are others, but you can find more info on Internet and if all that fails, you can remove any Doomconfig.cfg and Autoexec.cfg on base and d3xp official folders and also on every mod folder that you may have, don't worry, when you will run D3 a new doomconfig.cfg file will be automatically created with the standard settings, then you will only need to configure D3 from the in game preferences menu, of course it will not be as optimized as doing it manually but at least it will run well and with no strange crashes ! big grin

Note...: Oh, and of course you need to have the latest DirectX, latest GFX drivers, latest D3 patch, at least v1.3.0 or v1.3.1 and latest Windows Service Pack update.

I hope that this info will be of any help to everyone ! smile
