Brilliant Highlights (v0.3.1b) - File Description

Description:
We have seen a few updates to this Graphics tweaking mod done by Dafama2K7, but it has been almost two years since the original developer has worked is magic on it...until today, that is... Maha_x has sent in his revised version of his popular Brilliant Highlights Mod!

This version is not so much an update, as it is an improvement; There is no more eye candy here then there is in the last submission, however, this version addresses some issues identified with the 8000 series Gforce cards, along with some compatibility problems, it will also be a fair bit faster. For those of you just tuning in, and are wondering what this mod is about, it is a modified shader for Doom 3 and RoE that updates Doom's graphics to a more modern day level.

Somethings to note about this version:
  • It is untested for Radeon hardware.
  • It is a Beta version.

Refer to the readme for additional information.

    ###

    What is it?
    -----------

A modified shader for Doom 3 and RoE that updates Doom's graphics to a more modern day level.

This new version should correct problems with the new 8000 series Geforces.

    Features
    -----------------------------------

    # HQ specular highlights #
    - Power function based falloff
    - Dynamic falloff (shinyness)
    - Specular map masking
    - Per-pixel Halfangle math

    # HQ Normalmapping #
    - Normalmap normalization increases bumpmap quality
    - Normalmap filtering reduces specular aliasing

    # Other FX #
    - "Backlights" add realism by casting subtle light behind objects, as in reality, light tends to reflect and shine back from surfaces it hits.
    - "Pocket shadows" creates shadows into the dents of the bumpmaps.

    Beta status
    ------------

Untested for Radeon hardware! Should work "by the specs" but this hasn't insured anything in the past.

    So how do I install?
    --------------------

Option A: Create a folder to your Doom 3 directory (name it "bhmod" for example) and extract this package there. You can then access the mod trough the Doom 3 mods menu. Use this option if you play online (servers wont allow permanent mods)

Option B: Permanent install (more like "allways enabled"). Extract the file "z_bhmod.pk4" to your doom3/base folder. The mod will then be automatically (and allways) installed.

RoE: Extract the file "z_bhmod.pk4" to your doom3/d3xp folder.

    Brilliant Bloom update:

Copy the interactions.vfp from this package's glprogs folder to your brilliant bloom's glprogs (overwriting the old file).

    Uninstall?
    ----------

Option A: Delete the folder you created above.

Option B: Delete file "z_bhmod.pk4" from your doom3/base folder.

RoE: Delete file "z_bhmod.pk4" from your doom3/d3xp folder.

    Feedback?
    ---------

Sure; mail me at maha_x [AT] hotmail [DOT] com

    Disclaimer?
    -----------

See Doom 3 eula. Also, if you want to use my mod, ask. Not that I wanted to say no, just that I know. And credit me where required.

    Not bad!

By the way, have you ever considered using half-lambert terms for sub-surface scattering/backlighting? They're a lot smoother and more accurately represent stuff like that. I know I posted a few screenshots of a skin shader I wrote in HLSL and semi-applied to Doom 3.

Everything was reddish, but it looked like it was SCATTERED, DAMMIT! smile

    And had red fog. Ssshh.

The term "backlight" implies a second light created behind the object, not behind the surface.

I have considered sub-surface lighting but since there's no way to control the render order, I dont see my ideas coming to life anytime soon smile There's no way to evaluate the thickness of the object atm. Only way around these limitations would be doom3 full source. Wonder when that's coming out...

BTW, anyone with a Radeon out there? I'd like to hear back if my shader works on Radeons.

A 100% speed increase over 0.60 on my laptop (Geforce 8400). Pretty good.

That just looks like sub-surface scattering to me. And from what I can garner from your algorithm, it works pretty similarly to how Crysis handles its semitransparent foliage.

Incidentally, what are the settings you're using for those bloom pics? They look pretty good!

Can this mod be used together with Extreme Quality Mod and/or parallax extreme?

EQM, probably. Parallax, definitely no. You would need to add a few segments to this shader copied over from the parallax one to get the benefits of both.

In fact i have already made but not released versions of my Parallax and Relief mods using the Brilliant Highlights as a basis, but..., but using the old v0.60 updated to NG versions. It doesn't look bad, but would be good to make it with the new version... When i have some time i will try to do it... cool

Will you make at least the Quake 4 and Prey versions of this amazing Brilliant Highlights shaders, i will let you know, that, if you don't have time, i have already made this versions, and i can send to the respective sites, of course on your name and being you as a developer, i don't need to be named, i only have already made the conversions changes, and in the docs changed the D3 names by the Q4 and Prey ones.

Please, this games players have to be the rights to be able to use this awesome shaders mod !!! big grin

Put in contact with me, to tell me anything, great Maha-X ! Beer! Beer!
