DOOM 3 Relief Mapping - File Description

Description:
The modified Doom3 shader was created to test relief mapping technique with high-quality game art. Note, however, that some geometry will not look correct with relief mapping as the art for the game was not created for this effect. For correct use of the technique the edges of scene polygons should have no displacement (depth=0). But since the depth maps were created from the game normal maps this is not garranteeded.

This modifcation will not damage your Doom3 installation. It will just extract some textures from the game data pack and modify them to include depth information. All original files are mantained and you can quickly get back to your original Doom3 installation by deleting the extracted files.

Doom3 Relief Mapping
=====================

For details about how relief mapping works refer to:

demo -> http://fabio.policarpo.nom.br/files/reliefmap3.zip
paper -> http://www.shadertech.com/contest/#reliefmapping
http://fabio.policarpo.nom.br/docs/ReliefMapping_I3D2005.pdf

To install this modification:

- from your Doom3 instalation path create folder doom3\base\glprogs\

- copy file interaction.vfp to folder Doom3\base\glprogs\

- drag and drop file doom3\base\pak004.pk4 into the tool normal2depth.exe

- wait for processing of all normal maps (this will create folder doom3\base\textures)

To remove the modification and get back to original Doom3 installation:

- delete the file doom3\base\glprogs\interaction.vfp
- delete the folder doom3\base\textures

You must select ULTRA QUALITY mode in order to have the calculated depth maps loaded (or else you will see no relief at all).

Relief mapping is slower than standard normal mapping. For this reason, we recommend going down to 640x480 or 800x600 in order to get better FPS through the game. Works great with a GeForce7800 card!

Enjoy,
Fabio Policapo (fabio.policarpo AT gmail.com) and Manuel M. Oliveira (oliveira AT inf.ufrgs.br)

Acknowledgements: The tool for creating depth maps from normal maps (normal2depth.exe) is based on a Poisson multigrid solver written by Carlos E. Scheidegger and Gustavo S. Neto.

I must say I am well impressed. I downloaded and tried it. This is a great graphical enhancement Rock . It's a shame that some elements in the game are not visualised properly (as you say in the readme), such as the door in the second screen shot above (which I saw myself in the game as well). If this can in anyway be fixed it will surpass perfection. On the whole a greatly significant improvement on the game graphics. Two Thumbs Up!

I'm having some trouble. I've installed it, run the exe, but now everything in the game is black. Any idea?

Get the 1.3 patch, and also make sure you update your graphics card drivers. Also make sure your video card is 100% DirectX 9.0 competible.

Grumble #1: This mod cuts your frame-rate down by a quarter! That's right, where you once had 40fps, you now have 10, which, for anything except a 7800, makes Doom 3 unplayable at a decent resolution.
Grumble #2: Some of the textures cannot be rendered properly, and appear as black squares in the environment (for me, that happened to the mars surface dust clouds. When I ran across the surface, I was blinded.
Grumble #3: A lot of the textures don't actually look that good. The textures that are shown in the movie clip are about the ONLY ones that work, for me, and even that's debatable when you look at the aforementioned door with the moving clamps.
As these bump-map-enhancing tricks become more and more complex and demanding, I can't help but think that it might be beneficial to use the actual high-poly models in these games!!!

you only get 40 FPS now and you actually mentioned using the hi poly models?

Do you want to pool some money for lottery tickets? If we win, I'll only take a quarter of the jackpot...

LOL!

To all who are having problems with this mod working IE everything turns black, I contacted the author. This is due to the fact that only nvidia has the 3.0 shader and can render the bump maps properly. Simply put, unless you are running a geforce 6600, 6800, or 7800 series card, your SOL
