NOTE: This file has become outdated and there's a newer / better version available.
You can still get this file but we suggest you have a look at the NEW / UPDATED VERSION first!

Description:
Everyone is always looking for ways to add to their gaming experience; How a game looks is always important, and having the graphics tweaked can only accomplish great things, with this in mind, Dafama2K7 aims to deliver! He does this by providing an updated version to his popular graphics tweaking mod. The Relief Mapping technique has been mixed with the latest version of BH NG v1.1, and Dafama2K7 has also used some of the techniques from the UEQ and Extreme Quality mods to enhance this shader even more!

Some of the features of this mod include:
    • Re-enhanced glprogs/interaction.vfp Relief mapping shader with BH NG latest technique to increase specular & normal bumpmapping, more relieve, brilliant, metallic and smooth look alike!
    • Support for both Relief mapping textures & models for D3 Base.
    • Support for both Relief mapping textures & models for D3XP ROE.

Relief Extreme Shaders will extract some textures from the game data pack and modify them to include depth information. All original files are mantained and you can quickly get back to your original Doom3 installation by deleting the extracted files.
Some changes in this feature include:
    • Only Models were converted using the Relief mapping technique, this version corrects this, now the textures have been converted as well.
    • This version has been re-worked so that it compatible with ROE, this mod is now a one stop shop

Developer's Note:
At the moment this mod only supports NVidia gfx cards or latest ATI gfx cards that are able to supports OpenGL32 v3.0 shaders, with at least DirectX v9.0c hardware support, but there will be a low-end version for old ATI gfx cards that only supports upto v2.0 shaders soon!

Refer to the readme for more information.

Doom 3 Relief Extreme Shaders v1.2 - Now updated by Dafama2k7.

Relief Mapping mod by Fabio Policarpo.

Brilliant Highlights up to v0.6b by Maha-X.

Extreme Quality mod & shaders up to v1.01 by Rygel.

Features...:

- Re-enhanced glprogs/interaction.vfp Relief mapping shader with BH NG latest tech. to increase specular & normal bumpmapping, more relieve, brilliant, metallic and smooth look alike !
- Support for both Relief mapping textures & models for D3 base.
- Support for both Relief mapping textures & models for D3XP ROE.

Warning...:

At the moment this mod only supports NVidia gfx cards or latest ATI gfx cards that are able to supports OpenGL32 v3.0 shaders, with at least DirectX v9.0c hardware support, but there will be a low-end version for old ATI gfx cards that only supports upto v2.0 shaders soon !

History...:

v1.2 - Just i noticed that the Relief author didn't convertit the models, only the textures to Relief mapping technique, i have done this, and now there is Relief not only for the textures used in the maps, but also for the models. In addition to this, i was noticed that was no supports for neither textures, not models for D3XP (ROE) and i also have converted all the textures & models now to Relief mapping, so now this mod supports both D3 base & ROE in one go, there's no need to do a separate mod.

Also i have re-enhanced the glprogs/interaction.vfp Relief shader with some new technique that i learned recently. :)

v1.1 - In this releasse the Relief Mapping technique has been mixed with the latest version of BH NG and also i have used some small techniques from the UEQ and Extreme Quality mods to enhance even more this shaders !

The results are amazing !!!

Note...:

Always make sure there is disabled compresion for textures on D3, this is already done in the Doomconfig.cfg, but if someone wants to use his own Doomconfig.cfg make sure to have this lines on it to be able to see the Relief...

image_usePreCompressedTextures "0"
image_useCompression "0"

If you typed this from the in-game console you need to type vid_Restart now to activate.

Original Doc...:

Doom3 Relief Mapping
=====================

This modifcation will not damage your Doom3 installation. It will just extract some textures from the game data pack and modify them to include depth information. All original files are mantained and you can quickly get back to your original Doom3 installation by deleting the extracted files.

The modified Doom3 shader was created to test relief mapping technique with high-quality game art. Note, however, that some geometry will not look correct with relief mapping as the art for the game was not created for this effect. For correct use of the technique the edges of scene polygons should have no displacement (depth=0). But since the depth maps were created from the game normal maps this is not garranteeded.

For details about how relief mapping works refer to:

demo -> http://fabio.policarpo.nom.br/files/reliefmap3.zip
paper -> http://www.shadertech.com/contest/#reliefmapping
http://fabio.policarpo.nom.br/docs/ReliefMapping_I3D2005.pdf

To install this modification:

- from your Doom3 instalation path create folder doom3\base\glprogs\

- copy file interaction.vfp to folder Doom3\base\glprogs\

- drag and drop file doom3\base\pak004.pk4 into the tool normal2depth.exe

- wait for processing of all normal maps (this will create folder doom3\base\textures)

Include this in your Autoexec.cfg (already present in the mod)...:

seta r_testARBProgram "0" // def. 0
seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "0"
seta image_useCompression "0"

vid_Restart

If you installed in the base the glprogs and textures folders, to remove the modification and get back to original Doom3 installation:

- delete the folder doom3\base\glprogs
- delete the folder doom3\base\textures

You must select ULTRA QUALITY mode in order to have the calculated depth maps loaded (or else you will see no relief at all).

Relief mapping is slower than standard normal mapping. For this reason, we recommend going down to 640x480 or 800x600 in order to get better FPS through the game. Works great with a GeForce7800 card!

Enjoy,
Fabio Policapo (fabio.policarpo@gmail.com) and Manuel M. Oliveira (oliveira@inf.ufrgs.br)

Acknowledgements: The tool for creating depth maps from normal maps (normal2depth.exe) is based on a Poisson multigrid solver written by Carlos E. Scheidegger and Gustavo S. Neto.

All textures & models are already extracted and included in the mod, so you only need to drag the mod to Doom3 folder and select it from mods list like any other mod, well, this or create a shortcut in Windows to access directly, that is easy, i have many shortycuts to the mods that i like more.

@Andrelz0r: No, this mod contains only textures, models and shaders to make D3 appear with more depth in they're environment .

@monk00: I include this file just in case someone want to change bumpmaps .tga's, but you don't need this, the textures are already converted, if you want to use in another mod you only need the shaders (glprogs folder) and the textures folder that contains the tweaked for Relief bumpmaps, also the models folder contains the tweaked for Relief models.

Hello there again Dafama.

I tested this mod and sorry for saying this to you, but it is much worser then version 1.1. It is even one of the worst graphics mods I've ever tested.

Let me tell you the huge 'bugs':

First of all let me say that you caused more glitches and bugs then that there are any improvements in this version. 95% of the textures and models look all weird. Everything is distorted and it looks very ugly. You've converted more textures and models and all I can say is that if you remove the whole model folder and a few textures (like some tile textures and more), then the mod definetly looks better. There is 1 big conclusion for the Relief technique. It DOESN'T fit at all in Doom 3. It causes to much problems and therefore it is not recommended to work with this technique again. Relief, Parallax > it is all not working well enough with the Doom 3 engine.

There is 1 thing that stands out > The Briliiant Highlights section. The Brilliant Highlights always were fantastic, but still there are some bugs in the BH part. The shadow bug that I already told you earlier is still in there. Look at the face from the guy with the glasses that is talking to Betruger and watch carefully. This bug is found in many places so far in Doom 3 with almost all versions of the BH mod (so in the Relief mod too). The only mod that hasn't got that bug is the Parallax Extreme mod, but since the Parallax part isn't very interesting and looks weird too, I suggest to make a very very good and bugfree Brilliant Highlights mod and then the result is much better. I know you are busy with a new Brilliant Highlights mod and I hope that one will be a breakthrough in the graphical part of Doom 3!

I also hope that your new Brilliant Highlights mod is much better organized, because this one is still a mess. I now understand the structure, because you've explained it to me and other people, but it doesn't make sense to give us all your files that you use in your projects. Just give us THE mod and files that are absolutely needed, not the rest!

Good luck and happy modding big grin

I wasn't organized, as i stated on the next mods comming, eh. wink

I know that both Relief & Parallax aren't suieted for D3 enigine games at all and that have glitches on many textures, specially on models, but i wanted to convert all this for the users to have and put only what they want, this version is a mod that can be tweaked for the users, if some don't want the models, just remove it and that's all, it's very easy and i wanted to make first this for all, then on a new version i will concentrate on a more specific clear and good look version for a high demanding users like you wink

And i agree that this version is not perfect, ha ha, i know, but i wanted to give this to D3 community.

Also i knowed from the moment i was send it that you will not liked this, ha ha, sorry. big grin

And i already made a BH based on latest Parallax but without Parallax that is amazing and doesn't have the Swann shadow bug, i will release it soon, it's NVidia only at the moment.

Also i have made a Parallax Extreme shaders version of all 3 Parallax versions, the v1.0, the v2.0 and the v1.1 (this is by Volland), with BH included, looks good and doesn't need NVidia, althoug NVidia versions look better, of course.

Nice Dafama. I'm glad that you have a good value of support and it is indeed true that you added the Relief v1.2 mod a long time ago, so my complaining about that one wasn't very smart of me. I know that I'm a little too hard sometimes, but I love your work and I'm a person that want to have everything perfect. Since I don't know anything about the shader stuff I can only pass my opinion to you and then I hope that you can do something with it. You really listen to peoples comments and I appreciate that very much wink

I'm also glad that you discovered the bug on Swann (I didn't knew his name anymore so thx for that too wink ). The bug is everywhere in the game, but the beginning of the game clearly shows the shadow bug. I'm glad that it is resolved, because I hate it when I put a better graphics mod over Doom 3 and are settled with new bugs that doesn't exist in Doom 3 itself.

I have a question (yes I'm almost done with talking):
Why is the new BH mod that comes for nVidia only? Is it because Doom 3 uses nVidia techniques for use in graphics and you use that too? Not that it bothers me, because I have 2 pc's with nVidia cards (7600GT and 7900GT), but I think ATI users won't be happy with it (nVidia is the better choice anyway for cards at this moment). I know that Doom 3 was made for the GeForce series when it came out and that ATI users had problems with running Doom 3, so it's not entirely new to me.

Looking forward to the new BH. It surely will gonna rock!

Ah, no problem, i understand the way you talk and that don't want to say that you hate me, ha ha smile I have made an already very good shaders that works on both NVidia & ATI gfx cards, the Relief, in this moment, i haven't done, but one think is for sure, i was an ATI user before, and a happy one, but NVidia is much, much better, they support a much more bits in the depth colors and also shaders v3.0, from much time, while ATI only started with them sote time ago, in fact Doom 3 reduced it's gfx quality to be more compatible with ATI, because of this i can make it much better the new shaders.

Althoug i do all what i can to have very good shaders for both, an in the next Parallax v1.3 all will see a very good shaders compatible with both gfx cards, this is already done, but i always tweaking. cool

Dafama, I *highly* suggest you check your sources for some of your posted data. nVidia's cards tend to be, sorry, are a piece of crap technologically-- the reverse is actually true about Doom being scaled for ATi cards. One of the several technological advances in Doom, testing pixels for visibility *before* running shaders on them (also referred to as early-Z culling, which is a slightly simplified form of deferred shading) was completely unsupported by then-current nVidia cards and is still somewhat lacking in support even today! I also am more than slighly skeptical about the 'more bits in the depth buffer' idea-- these are standardized (hence the ARB designations for the OpenGL extensions used in Doom) so as to be vendor-neutral. In fact, you can find specific references to ligting optimizations made for the inferior hardware put out by the Big Green.
From a software standpoint ATi has the upper hand as well-- you can thank one Natalya Tartarchuck, one of ATi's head researchers, for the industry-beloved parallax occlusion mapping improvement to Kaneko's original technique. nVidia just adopted relief mapping since:
A) Parallax was already taken by a competitor and
B) They needed a texture-space based VDM algorithm to get behind, and relief mapping happened to be available. The original paper that suggested the technique was published anonymously.

Anything that needs repeating?

But i said that because i read it on a magazine, and also John Carmack said that NVidia has many things better, i like the ATI gfx cards also, but the last that i have was a Radeon 9800 Pro (Shaders v2.0), that i was very happy with, but now i have NVidia GT7600 and because uses shaders v3.0 i noticed a much better reflexions, and other gfx things in general, but i know neither of this gfx cards are the latest from both NVidia and ATI, anyway i have two computers one with an ATI and one with NVidia and i will sure improve the shaders for ATI as well, ok, i like it both and my computers cpu are AMD also. smile
