  Doom Chronicles Interview
This Page has been viewed 6496 times since March 2004!
Hello Cody and LW! Thanks for taking the time out from working on your mod to answer some of the questions we have for you.

Bluehair: With Chronicles, you seem to have taken Realism to the next level, why did you make this choice?

Cody: Well, first of all, I wanted a name that would let the community know that this was NOT just a weapon tweak....I think our old name was very misleading in the sense that it made people instantly think that the mod was nothing but an oversized weapon tweak. This is CERTAINLY not the case.

Also, with the new storyline that we are developing, the name "Realism" just didn't fit....We had been discussing a name for about a month, when I thought of the "Chronicles" name while at work......I didn't like it at first, I must admit....I thought that it sounded sort of corny....However, I was talking with Live_wirE later that night, and asked him if had thought of a cool name.....I had mentioned to him how I had this wild idea of splitting the mod up into 4 chapters, and releasing one at a time to the community. He thought it was a good idea, and we continued to try to come up with a good name...We actually came up with Four good names that fit with the story line, and decided to make these the names of the different chapters (as of yet, the only one we are revealing is: No Escape). I had not told him the chronicles idea yet, and asked him if he had any good ideas on what the over-all name for the mod would be...He said" Well....why not call it the Doom Chronicles?" Right then, I knew that Chronicles would be the new name...I presented this to the team, and they all loved the idea, so we decided to stick with it.

LW: Well as Cody said ppl kinda got it wrong wif the name the only thing i see that we are making more real are the weapons fires this is how cody and i started talkin about the name change.

Bluehair: In your recent news update, you say that the four chapters that will make up your mod will be akin to 'mini-series'. Could you tell us more about their structure? Will each of them be a follow-up to the previous or instead will they put the player into a different setting each time?

Cody: Well, as much as I hate to compare our mod to a movie, the structure will be sort of like Lord of the Rings, because each Chapter will take place right where the last one left off.... However, each chapter will be very unique from one another. Each will have its own "plot" as for say, and the game play will greatly vary from chapter to chapter. Also, despite the fact that they take place right after one another, the settings will be quite different chapter to chapter....For example, the setting in chapter one will GREATLY differ from that of chapter 2, and so on....

LW: they will follow on with a storyline but will have different sences I don't want to give anything away about how the look will change for each chapter but each chapter will follow the one before it vut you wont need to play anyothers to enjoy it.

Bluehair: Can you give our readers some tidbits about the story of the first chapter?

Cody: Well, basically the first chapter takes place right after Doom Guy is rescued.... Since it is really never said in Doom 3 who exactly the squad was that rescued Doom Guy, we have decided to make them a special forces unit assigned to these sort of tasks... Before they get off of Mars, they receive a distress signal from another base.... For the moment, we are calling this base Sector 7, and it is a top secret military installment that not event the UAC knew about.... Doom Guy instantly realizes that the invasion at the UAC was so weak for one reason: The main invasion hit this much more highly fortified military base....And the squad that picked him up unanimously decide to head there.....Without giving away too much of the storyline, we I will say this: They get stuck there, and they see that there is "No Escape" in sight.....

LW: big grin what cody said

Bluehair: You also inferred in that news that Chronicles may also feature brand new MP modes. Then, you plan on making use of the recently released SDK, do you? Could you tell us more about them? Will they released after the SP chapters?

Cody: We will be releasing new mp maps that will feature all of our new weapons and upgrades to the engine with each release of DC....As for the new modes, they will not be a high priority until we have the SP campaign pretty much completed.... However, our new "toys" should give people plenty of entertainment with the current modes...One feature that we have made for SP, and we will be including in MP is Alternate Firemodes for the weapons. Using the SDK, I have set up an easy way to enable every weapon in the game to have an alternate fire mode triggered by a key bound to that function (I use MOUSE2). I also am working on making "Fire Selectors" for weapons, so that certain weapons (such as rifles) can have different firemodes on top of having an Alternate Fire. One example for this is an assault rifle we are planning on adding. It's Alt Fire is a grenade launcher, and its different firing modes will include: Full Auto, Semi, and 3-Shot Burst!

Also, it I am very interested in seeing a "playable" coop mode that will work with all of our SP missions...Though this is not a first priority, I would like to see this added eventually.

LW: We will get the SP player outta the way first then probley work on a co-op mode i would enjoy co-op but we will see how things pan out. Should add alot more enjoy ment to the game with the new weapons for MP so i hope ppl wil like it.

Bluehair: What did motivate you to have Chronicles broken into several parts? How much time will the players have to wait after one chapter is released?

Cody: I decided that having the mod broken into 4 parts should guarantee that members of the community will be able to play parts of our SP campaign four times quicker than they would have before.... I would like to see Chapter One finished within the next couple months but, officially, am going to say that "it will be done when it is done"...

LW: cody answered that prety well

Bluehair: By which aspect of its engine are you the most admirative?

Cody: I'd have to say the ease of use....The D3 SDK is the FIRST sdk I have ever worked with, and I have already been able to do things that I had feared would be either impossible, or too difficult.... I must hand it to ID, they did a beautiful job at setting up the code for this game.

Also, I love the graphics capabilities of this engine....They are absolutely amazing, and I cannot wait to start getting our own models into the game!

LW: the fact that how easy it is to use im a modeler and iv found map building and stuff like that alot easyer then other games i hav looked at i just like how simply it is to mod.

Bluehair: What will make your mod better and different to the other mods which are being released for Doom 3?

Cody: The NUMBER ONE thing about our mod that will set it apart will be the action....The few other mods I have looked at all boast about adding new gameplay elements, and new weapons, and monsters, etc. But for the most part, they all conclude by saying that they will continue with the standard D3 Gameplay.....And, though I am not against D3's gameplay, I will say that it was nowhere near what I would call action-packed......Doom 3 was an excellent explorer/horror game, DC will be an excellent ACTION/Horror game. Every single level will be loaded with action sequences, and loaded with triggers and scripted events.......People, including some of my own team mates, have called me crazy.....Have said that the D3 engine cannot support the gameplay That I want....I say they're mistaken. I have a terrible processor, video card, and not a lot of ram, and I have been able to spawn rooms clear full of zombies and hardly see a stutter in the FPS.....The biggest problem with D3 is that people underestimate how well it really runs...But loads of monsters is not the only way you make an action game......In the end, it will be our well scripted battle sequences, as you lead your men through hall after hall of insane, close quartered combat...That's the Action we're looking for...

Another key factor of our mod is that aside from a few instances, you are never alone.....In DC, you will always have a full functioning squad at your side. And, depending on what part of the game you are on, you might even get to give these guys orders from time to time =).....But for the most part they will either fight alongside you, or be the ones giving you the orders... Also, there will be many key characters who come to life in SEVERAL full voiced over cutscenes that aid in telling the dramatic story of DC!

One final note I must add about the gameplay is the weapons....We are planning on including as MANY weapons as we logically can, and are going to have brand new weapons featured in each chapter..... All of these weapons will have Alternate Firemodes (as mentioned above) and some will even be able to be double wielded (meaning you can hold two, one in each hand)! All of our weapons are set up in a way that they will help to add to the action and excitement of our mod!

LW: well i can't say that other ppl mods arn't as good or even better then ours because each person has there own type of game play that they like what ours offers is a more action packed game play and not everyone will like that feel sorry for them but if thats the way they are big grin so be it

Bluehair: Do you have any position left in your team?

Cody: YES! Though we are fairly large (by the time you read this, we should have 20 members) we are still lacking in a few areas....For one, we have 4 guys who can model, but only one guy who can do textures, who is overall new to doing them (though I must say that his work thus far has been very nice!).....We could definitely use some people who can apply textures to new models.....We could also use more coders (As of right now, I'm the only guy on the team who knows C++), and more mappers would be nice, inparticullarly people who can do SP maps... And we will definitely need some people to help us out with the many cutscenes, along with some more voice actors...Overall, I have no limit on how big of a team I have...If you are interested in joining, and can prove that you both are willing to put forth the effort, and that you will be of use, then we will happily accept you to the team....As I see it, the more talented people we have on the team, the quicker we will be able to get our content out to the community!

LW: skiner and coder and another animator would be good either 3d max or maya

Bluehair: When can we expect to see a first release?

Cody: Like I stated earlier, I would like to see a release within the next couple of months, but the most I can say honestly is that: "it will be done when its done".

LW: Soon i hope big grin but we have alot of work to do

Bluehair: How good has community support been for your modding team so far?

Cody: The support has been fairly good, and we love all of the feedback that we get from the community....One thing I would like to see more of is more people visiting our site and posting in our forums....This is one team that WILL listen to what you guys have to say...I mean, what good is a mod if it has nothing in it that the community wants? LOL....

LW: Love them always wiling to hav a say which is good you know if your doing sumthing wrong or right thank yous all ver much.

Bluehair: Is there anything you would like to say to your fans before we wrap this up?

Cody: Well, for one, I'd like to let my team know how much I appreciate their constant help, and un-paralleled dedication....This mod would never even have a chance of becoming what I want it to be without the help of you guys....Thanks!

Also, I'd like to let the community know that we are all working very hard on creating the most kick-ass mod ever, and we cannot wait to start getting this stuff out to you guys...We Know YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!

And, on a final note, I'd like to thank the staff at D3 files, both for hosting our web page, and for giving us the chance to get this info out to the community....Thanks guys! YOU ROCK!!!

LW: i hav fans?? wow gotta be a first well thank you guys for the support means alot to the team and our forums are always open come have your say cody and I are online alot and WILL get back to you if you want to know sumthing so plz drop us line.
