When DOOM 1 was released in 1993, it shook the gaming world with it's amazing gameplay, beautiful graphics and frightning sound. But foremost, DOOM was a revolutionary and ground-breaking experience, that set the standards for future games. DOOM was furthermore awfully scary, exiting and simply incredible. Thousands of gamers around the world, got the feeling of the ultimate gaming experience for the first til, when their sweathy little gamer-fingers touched the DOOM package for the first time. I can still remember when the splash screen for DOOM appeared on my monitor for the first time. The feeling was wonderful, when I with wet chins, started out my first game of DOOM ever. Even though it's more than ten years ago, I still tend to play this incredible game a lot. So when id software announced that they were working on a sequel, the gaming industry were shocked once again by the immersive and stunning atmosphere, and the feeling of the ultimate game, appeared in the face of the gamer once agin. Doom III provides sexy graphics, ground-shaking sound and just like the old Doom, it's extremely scary! id software choose to focus on the scary part of the new Doom, instead of high-paced action. Together with Trent Reznor from the music-band Nine Inch Nails, ID is working on creating a sound experience never seen in a computer game before. With full surroundsound, cracking glass, bullets and flying past your ears, and frightning monsters suddenly attacking you from behind, Doom III look like it's going to make your ears something special. But as mentioned before, sound doesn't do it all.
It may be sweet to listen to the crispy sound, but it seem to lack something in the game, the graphics that is. And once again, id software managed to create something never seen alike. With the incredible amount of detail, dynamic lights, bump-mapping technology and all the technical features you can possibly imagine, Doom III is definately going to kick some butt here. And if you've seen the movies and screenshots released (and who hasn't), there isn't much to do but wipe of the drool from your chins, because this game looks amazingly beautiful. With the new movie Doom - The Legacy released, and tons of interesting interviews, there's a lot of information for gamers to look at. But it's difficult to find your way around in the massive amount of interviews at the time. There's not much information, but they're incredibly interesting. id software want Doom III to be more than the average game. They want their gamers to wake up at night, and make Doom III the first thing they think about. It may sound like the veterans from ID have high expectations, but it looks like they may be able to make their dream come true quite easy. With the revolutionary engine, and a story written by Matthew Costello, the man behind the 7th guest and 11th Hour, two extremely frightning games, Doom III is likely to be a horror beyond comparision. And I can surely tell you, the game is fantastic. Spanning over 30 enormous levels, from dark korridors on the base on Mars to huge outdoor scenes on the surface of Mars, Doom III looks and plays wonderfull. id software carefully selects the amount of outdoor areas, so that they don't implement them, just because it's the trend of the time to do so in computer games. They wan't Doom III to be the best, something that's likely to work for them.
During the game, you'll be exposed to tons of incidents as the story folds on Mars, and you'll have to have absolutely no expectations of getting out alive. But there's always hope, right? To make your life as a space marine on Mars more miserable, a failed experiment on the base has opened a door to another dimension, and let thousands of raging monsters through it. You're, along with a group of other Space Marines, sendt to the base to bring order to chaos. The group gets split up, where you get to stay and guard the spaceship, while the others go investigate. But they do not return.
Now, you're the only one that kan save the world from total annihilation by those evil monsters. Only a shotgun stands between you and a raging demon. Speaking of the weapons, id software choose to reuse some weapos from the old Doom. We've already seen the Pistol and Shotgun, but it's been confirmed that more is coming. With only the help of some NPC's you'll meet along the, you'll be thrown out in a battle between life and death. id software have choosen the perfect balance between the hardcore action, and the silent sneaking around. Because you'll have to hold the use of ammo at a minimum. Of course it will be possible to complete the game by shooting everything you'll encounter along the route, but you have a bigger chance of survival if you sneak your way around. As soon as an enemy hear the sound of your weapon, there's a big chance that it's going to investigate the sound - which in this case, is you. This is one of the things that make Doom III that special, the way the engine handles light effects. The Dynamic lighting is truely amazing. id software have created a light, that allows true radiosity, which in short mean, damn realistic lightning. This part of Doom III means so much to the gameplay, that the game wouldn't work well without it. Imagine this scenario:
You're sneaking down a long korridor, nervous, and only holding a gun for your protection. Suddenly a sound make your speaker rumble. It's the sound of footsteps, rather large ones that is. At the end of the korridor, the shadow of a 9 feet tall demon appears, just around the corner. Confused and surprised, you look around for cover, but no solution is found. Just as you're about to pray for your life, you discover a dangling lamp, hanging from the ceiling. Quickly, you shoot the lamp, and darkness surrounds you. The demon hears the shot, and rages towards you. It stops 5 feet away from you, looks around and roars so that your speakers almost blast. As seen here, this is suich a vital part of the gameplay, as it creates a fear, that wouldn't have been there without this amazing lightning technology. In this scene, we really get a feel of what the lighting eninge can do. This, combined with the sound engine, creates the ultimate gaming experience, that gamers want.
It looks like things are going just the way id software wants, and we can wait to see more of this amazing game. It's almost like the days up to cristmas, you can't wait to see what Santa has for you. id software are hoping for a release in end of 2003, so that gives us plenty of time to upgrade our systems, because id software confirm that you'll have to have a Ge-Force 3 or better, to experience Doom III the right way, exiting, immersive and foremost, insanely scary!
