Doom 3 has not be created to be any revolutionary new online gaming experience. It is there to be an oustanding single player experience - which it performs very well. Having said that the game does come with 4 gametypes to start with; these are detailed below.
It is highly likely that the community will bring new game types to Doom 3 with the SDK and as they become popular and well grounded they will be added here.

The most original gametype there is - every marine for his/her self. It has always been one of the most popular gametypes and I think Doom III will be no exception. With a full arsenal of weapons and every man being a target it's guaranteed to be frag fun. Whoever has the most points at the end wins.

Using the same concept as the standard deathmatch now you're thrown in with people who are on your team and are not targets to be killed. A popular alternative to the regular deathmatch as you have to work more tactically and (provided it's not turned off) avoid fragging your own team mates. Whichever team has the most points at the end wins.

A one on one game which most FPS games have, it's a way of determining the best of two players and is often used in full on tournaments to determine a winner by pitching mixtures of people at each other and then pitching the winners at each other until there is one victor.

Last man standing isn't a revolutionary new gametype but it is a good game to play. Basically everyone starts off with a limited amount of lives and once those lives are up you're out of the game until the next round. Whoever is left at the end is the winner, the last man standing.
