Tweaking Doom III is still in its infancy, while as it is there are tons of guides out there with lots of useful info I wouldn't risk saying anything is 100% concrete once you leave the bounds of the standard 'known' tweaks (such as changing image quality and so on). That said the information below is here to help you optimise Doom III, read through it all and use what you think is necessary.

One thing I'd recommend to start is that you create a plain text file called autoexec.cfg and place it in the base folder. That way all your custom tweaks are in once place and are far easier to reference. Also please backup doomconfig.cfg before starting incase you make a mistake, the easiest way to restore your settings is to copy over a known-to-work doomconfig.cfg file and delete autoexec.cfg.

com_videoRam Amazingly Doom 3 can mis-detect how much ram your video card has. Set this value equal to the total memory on your graphics card.

image_filter

Sets whether to use bi-linear or tri-linear filtering, there is very little visible difference and you get a performance boost by setting it to bi-linear. GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST

image_anistropy

Level of anistropic filtering to use on textures, higher numbers use more processing power. 2, 4, 8 or 16. Set to 1 to use video card control panel

image_lodbias

Controls mipmap quality. -2 is the best setting but has the biggest performance hit. 2 is the worst setting. 0 - for FX5600 upwards try -1 or -2

r_useTurboShadow

Use a faster method of working out shadows. Older drivers may not support this. 1

r_useOptimizedShadows

Determines if static shadow volumes should be used 1

r_shadows

Completely disable shadows if set to 0. Not worth the FPS gain. 1

image_downSizeBump

Enables or disables bump map image downsizing. Useful if your video card has less than 256mb ram. 1

image_useCompression

Sets if texture compression is enabled or not.Only set to 0 on 256mb+ cards. 1

g_bloodEffects

Show/hide bloot effects and so on. Hiding them is not worth the performance gain. 1

g_decals

Show/hide bullet holes and so on. Hiding them is not worth the performance gain. 1

g_showBrass

Animates shooting shells from weapon. Disable for MP for a performance boost. 1

g_projectileLights

Bullets that glow emit light. Disable for MP for a performance boost. 1

g_doublevision

Should the screen go blurred when you're hit? 0

g_muzzleFlash

Show the muzzle flash when a weapon is fired. Not showing is faster. 0 for MP, 1 for SP

g_showPlayerShadow

Controls whether your player casts a shadow or not. Not showing it is faster but for SP leave it on. 0 for MP, 1 for SP
