Mean Arena Quits D3 Project - Mods Posted by: Jamie on 12-27-2004 @ 23:45 |

This News Item has been viewed 1582 times! It seems that the person at Mean Arena has decided to call the quits for his project. Hes posted up a really long message that I won't explain to you but show you instead. Here's what he had to say:
Quote: Just thought I'd let the community know what's up with the Quake 2 Remix Mod I've had in production. It was originally stated to be the first 3 levels of Quake 2 done in DOOM 3 fashion, and so far has turned out pretty good. First 2 levels were completely built, while the 3rd was still a work in progress as it was much larger than the first 2. Unfortunately, I will be ending this mod short, and it won't be released. It's pretty bad when you start out with a group of 10 people wanting to do work on the mod, then weeks and weeks go by wondering where the work is at people are supposed to be working on, and then they either claim they don't want to do it, or just ignore my emails no matter how hard I've tried to make their job as easy as possible. Other people that actually did do the work they said they would, produced really well, and I thank them for that. Another reason I'm ending the mod short, (as well as all my other DOOM 3 work) is the definite lack of support. I never get any email replies from id Software, and that's no way to be to your most dedicated community members. Also, our music people just seem to ignore our emails now as well. I love the same ring of people and ignored emails. I have many hunches why, but I'll keep that to myself. Now onto the technical aspects of why the mod is being cut short. I've pretty much learned DOOM 3 technology inside and out, (which now has all been in vien) and on a technical (lighting side) DOOM 3 is only good for making mods if they are like DOOM 3. Because of the lighting limitations, there will always be many dark patches in your levels that will require some sort of flashlight or torch. This keeps the creativity to a minimum as you pretty much have to build your levels around the renderer. Unless of course you're a licensee of the DOOM 3 tech, then of course you can make engine modifications to combat the lighting issues. So in lighting the new Quake 2 maps, there are 2 options I was given. Either make them very, very dark that require a flashlight and Quake 2 doesn't have a flashlight, or light them very well to be able to see everything, and the levels run very, very poor. I just hope the people involved in getting our contacts to no longer be in contact with us anymore are satisfied.
So again, I apoligize to all the people who have sent in positive email, and posted positive comments on the message boards around the net who were looking forward to this project.
I will be continuing my community work, just not with Quake 3, DOOM 3 or any future id Software techology anymore.
We have seen alot of people quiting their project these last few months and I think HL2 is alot to do with it. It seems he might be going onto that engine also. Well the team at D3files will never quit so you can bet that we will always be around to give you the latest news and files from around the community. There is still alot of mods to look forward to.

I was really looking forward to all these awesome mods, Mean Arena, Team Fortress Doom or what ever the hell it was called. And one by one they just die. Damn.....I just want Hell on Earth to Come out now....DONT GIVE UP!!!
He makes a GREAT point about the ligting, D3 and Id did absolutely nothing to help these mod makers out. I remeber seeing newspaper areticles on how there will be so many D3 mods, Hell I can't name 3 mods that are still in contact and actually seem to be progressing alot. The engine's great, but the SDK and the tools they gave us suck. It's nearly impossible to make a l arge map, with good lighting without your game crashing. Hopefully Id will realize this maybe with the expansion and give out some new material for mod makers to make this all a little easier. Hell, look at HL2, look how many mods went from D3 to HL2. That's absurd. I do like HL2 better the gameplay is 10x better, I like the large levels. I like having guns that have a large range. And no matter what you say, as for now, the D3 multiplayer sucks so bad I am ashamed to have ever wanted to play the D3 multiplayer.
Well man im not gonna flame, and im not gonna say much, all im gonna say is i am proud of you man for trying your hardest, im proud that you did this and im proud that you tried to make this community happy...

Cmon get real man, they have bigggggerr projects right now, and there are a lot of community mods, i dont think they will walse up to ya and say hey, here is 500 bucks, get a new g-card, or Hey. need help, i'll map for u instead of doing or main project ...
Cmon man, just because u didnt get what u wanted u decide to give up on a whole game company.... Self Centered.. is what i call it, now i dont think many of us care that u gave up because u guys didnt make any effort to ask for help.... so this is ur own doing ... dont blame others... and dont sya u didnt have enough support because that was ur own fault
