System Shock Remake - Total Conversions

DOOM3Maps reports that a guy nicknamed Lanael would like to recreate 1994's hit game System Shock in the DOOM 3 engine. If you haven't got the chance to play this game nor its sequel, it was a kind of FPS combined with RPG elements; like DOOM 3, it took place in a sci-fi setting and its story was unfolded through numerous audio logs scattered across the space outpost Citadel, which one was controlled by a computer called Shodan, turned crazy.

Although the mod is still being thought out, Lanael has already produced some levels to see if it was feasible. The results of his experiments can be seen below.

Quote:
The ultimate goal is to create a package (a set of scripts and binaries) which will generate a Doom3 mod from the original System Shock files. Electronic Art owns the rights of this licence and is a bit nervous about theirs licences... ( even if the System Shock trademark is unused since System Shock 2 (released in '99)). A workaround is to generate all the data to avoid distributing original files. The final user will need to own both System Shock 1 and Doom 3.

He may face legal issues tho', I think Sapphire Scar was initially meant to be a System Shock 2 TC but got into complications eventually... Anyway, here are the plans about the mod:

Quote:
1) proof of concept
a) walls/decals (extract textures and ID's brushes generation)
b) objects/monsters (using some Doom 3 ones) (maybe extract 3D objects from System Shock)
c) pda/ui (audio logs/mails/video)
d) events/scripts (tests, light switches)
2) assembling a team (coz I don't know how far I could go alone...)
3) iterations and refactoring on the concept
a) generate levels/decals
c) add objects
d) add monsters (modelled ones)
e) add the simple scripts/events (light switches, elevators)
f) add audio logs, mails and videos in a PDA or special UI ?
g) add the gameplay scripts (so the game can be played fully)
4) new additions: new objects, monsters, sounds, textures, etc...
(and maybe generate additional geometry and/or objects)

If you like the idea or wish to help Lanael, I would encourage you to let a message on his Blog.

Leveldesign is very basic and the texture quality is quite poor. This is looking more like a Port to the Doom3 engine than an actual TC.

This comment is meant as positve critisizm. not as mindless blabering..

Hye,

Such a good idea. Make a total conversion of System Shock will be great, but the amount of work will be also very high.

Obviously, the textures are poor but the gameplay of the original game is marvelous. I hope you will keep it !

So, Lanael, well done and congratulations for the work you have already done.
Pimp!
Two Thumbs Up!

Sincerely yours, Mausus Atlas.

And now to an intresting story, Why is the Sapphire Scar team not working on a System Shock TC anylonger? Can it be? Yes, it is. The got hammered by eidos or whatever holds the control on that.

The above comment doesn't mean I don't support this TC, I am. Cause it's hell to get System Shock 1 to run on todays computers.

Although, I suggest for the conversion to be made to System Shock 2 instead. One, you don't seem to take advantage of the enormous graphical resource that the Doom3 engine is, and 2 I recall there already being one of those projects being worked on.

Wait a second I'm not saying your wrong kristusTF but didn't the same person that was doing the SS2 Mod for Doom 3 get canned? And from what I heard, this mod's only using a small amount of resources from the demo but that's just hear-esay(or how ever it's spelled stick out tongue) and I'm not 100% sure on that one.Not high quality but will probably run better on my Radeon 9600 then Doom 3 will stick out tongue
